Soddy-Daisy Fire Department

September 8, 2008 House Fire
This fire on Gann Road gives a unique opportunity for the website.
The fire was held back from spreading because the doors and windows were closed. When Soddy-Daisy Fire Department arrived they made entry by way of the front door. As fresh air entered the house the fire started to flare up but the fire department knocked it down quickly enough to prevent it from spreading further in the house and was done with a limited amount of water. In the fire service this is called a “Good Stop.”
When I arrived to take the photos most of the equipment was already loaded back on the trucks. They had just finished clearing the smoke with the fans and I was able to go in and get some photos we normally do not have on the website.

The photo above and ones that follow show how the fire, the heat and the smoke damages the house. The lack of major water damage shows the fire department did a quick stop and used caution not to damage the contents not destroyed by the fire. The photo above shows how a room and the contents can be saved by having a door closed. Most of he contents of the room will be salvageable.
The first photo from the outside looks like the house did not have a major fire inside. This again is because of closed doors and windows and quick action of the fire department.
The kitchen sustained the major damage and you can see the path of the fire going into other rooms with the worst damage near the ceiling. Just take a look at the photo of the chair in the living room with the kitchen in the background.
Please remember this is not an investigative report and just the observations of a firefighter for the benefit of the viewers who have never really seen what is left in a house after a hot fire that is contained by closed doors and windows and then the quick professional actions of the fire department. If they would have not done the job the way they did this house could have burned to the ground.

Firefighters are always saddened by the loss to the people they have chose to protect. At the same time they feel good when they know they did a good job. When you see them gather around the trucks after a fire like this you may see them kidding each other and laughing.
As a firefighter I would like to tell you what you are seeing. First this is one way men from all walks of life on a volunteer fire department deal with making it through one more fire with comrades in service and second it is the good feeling of knowing they have saved a lot of the contents of a home which is much more important than the building we call a house.
As I said this is a unique opportunity for the website and I also would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the Volunteer Fire Fighters of the Soddy-Daisy Fire Department.
